The Ben Ohau Range is yet another magnificent feature of the Mackenzie Country. This oil painting describes my impression of the Ben Ohau Range and Pukaki canal on a sun drenched August morning, just after a winter southerly has painted the Ben Ohau Range with its own icy brush. 'August Morning' shows the Mackenzie Country landscape in its warm and effervescent early morning colour, which makes it feel vibrant and alive. The drive along the side of the Pukaki Canal is a slight detour on the way from Tekapo to Twizel that is really worth taking. Just past the turnoff to Highway 80, the short drive offers a more scenic route to Twizel than Highway 8. If you happen to be there at around 7am on a beautiful August morning, you might just see it like this!
